The filibuster activity

Last week Texas senator Wendy Davis stood up to prevent a bill that would severely prevent access to abortion – by delivering an 11-hour speech. One of the most important rules of such a so-called filibuster is that you have to stand upright without help and that you stay on topic the whole time. Wendy’s shoes have become very popular since!
Doesn’t that sound like a great activity to do in class? Tell your students about Wendy Davis and have them deliver filibusters on different topics. You could let them draw the topic from a selection you prepared.  Without any further preparation they have to try to talk about it spontaneously for as long as possible without repeating themselves or digressing from the topic. Take rounds. Everyone draws a new topic from the hat. Who will last the longest?
